President Muizzu Appoints Mohamed Shakeel as President of Elections Commission
World ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially appointed Mohamed Shakeel as the President of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). The appointment follows a series of parliamentary approvals and comes in the wake of the resignation of the previous ECM President, Mohamed Zahid.
Shakeel's path to the presidency of the commission began on June 24, when he was first appointed as a member of the ECM. By June 30, the Maldivian Parliament (the Majlis) formally approved his elevation to the role of President, ensuring leadership continuity within the body responsible for overseeing the nation's democratic processes.
This appointment marks Shakeel’s second tenure as a member of the Elections Commission. He brings significant institutional experience to the role, having previously served as an ECM member from December 3, 2014, to May 9, 2018. His history with the commission dates back even further; he served as the Director General from September 1, 2013, until his appointment as a member in late 2014.
Beyond his work with the ECM, Shakeel has held other high-level administrative positions under the current administration, including a term as the Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation. His return to the Elections Commission is expected to leverage his deep familiarity with the commission's operational framework and regulatory requirements during a critical period for Maldivian electoral administration.
