President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has formally appointed new ambassadors to the State of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, strengthening diplomatic ties with two of the Maldives' key Middle Eastern partners.
During a ceremony held at the President's Office, the President presented Letters of Credence to Adam Shareef Umar and Thoriq Ibrahim. Adam Shareef Umar will serve as the Ambassador to the State of Qatar, while Thoriq Ibrahim will represent the Maldives in the United Arab Emirates.
Both appointees bring extensive governance experience to their new diplomatic roles. Adam Shareef Umar previously served as the Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works in the current administration. His background includes multiple Cabinet positions across previous governments and senior roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, providing him with deep institutional knowledge of Maldivian diplomacy.
Thoriq Ibrahim also transitions from a high-profile domestic role, having recently served as the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy. Like his counterpart, Ibrahim has a long history of public service, having held various ministerial portfolios and senior government positions under previous administrations.
The appointments were finalized following formal endorsement by the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament, during its session on June 15. The legislative approval paved the way for the President to formally commission the two diplomats.
Qatar and the UAE are critical partners for the Maldives, maintaining robust economic and diplomatic relations. The new ambassadors are expected to oversee strategic cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and bilateral development, ensuring that Maldivian interests are effectively represented in these influential Gulf nations.
