President Muizzu Calls for Community-Led, Faith-Based Strategy to Combat Narcotics Crisis

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for a comprehensive national rehabilitation system rooted in Islamic principles and active community participation to combat the Maldives' enduring narcotics epidemic.
Speaking during the third episode of the podcast ‘The Pulse’, the President described drug addiction as the most deeply rooted crisis facing the nation. He emphasized that addressing the underlying causes of substance abuse is a primary priority for his administration, asserting that the issue cannot be solved through superficial or piecemeal interventions.
According to President Muizzu, a holistic approach is essential to safeguard the youth. This strategy involves a dual focus: eradicating the root causes of addiction while simultaneously halting the proliferation of narcotics within the country. He stressed that the government's official policy is to move beyond temporary fixes toward a sustainable, long-term resolution.
The President highlighted that success depends on a unified effort involving families, civil society organizations, and state institutions. He noted that the ultimate goal is not only to rescue youth currently ensnared in addiction but to provide them with the necessary tools and opportunities to lead dignified and honorable lives upon their return to society.
A critical component of this framework, the President stated, is the prevention of relapse. He argued that it is illogical for a young person to successfully complete a rehabilitation program only to fall back into substance abuse due to a lack of support or structure during reintegration.
Finally, President Muizzu underscored the importance of faith in the recovery process. He maintained that because the Maldives is a nation founded on Islam, the rehabilitation system must inherently reflect Islamic tenets. By fostering a love for religious values and instilling a profound belief in faith, the President believes the state can cultivate the resolute determination necessary for individuals to abandon destructive behaviors permanently.
