President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a lack of equitable access to financial assistance and technology, along with unsustainable debt, are among the major obstacles to the progress and resilience of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He made these remarks in a special message on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the United Nations. In his message, the President highlighted the significant challenges small nations face in keeping pace with global changes. He noted that increasing regional political instability and inequality in the implementation of international laws are eroding trust in the UN, causing immense damage to humanity in countries like Palestine. President Muizzu emphasized that the ability to achieve national goals with the freedom to determine the Maldives' own future will empower the nation's efforts to become a developed country by 2040. He stressed the importance of investing in the progress of the people, strengthening the economy, and working with resilience against external challenges to reach that goal. The President stated that the UN must be an assembly that respects the rights of all states, listens to every nation, and ensures that no country's future is determined by another's influence. He said the UN's credibility can be restored by fully respecting international laws and adhering to its principles. Concluding his message, President Muizzu assured that the Maldives will always advocate for respecting peace and establishing justice. He affirmed that the Maldives will remain steadfast in working with the international community to ensure the complete independence of every nation to determine its own future.
