President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the critical role of humanity and compassion in supporting citizens and families affected by thalassemia, marking the annual observance of International Thalassemia Day on May 8. In a message shared via social media, the President highlighted that the day serves as a vital reminder for the nation to uphold humanitarian values. He stressed that providing consistent support and cooperation to every Maldivian child and family battling the condition is a collective responsibility essential for building a more resilient society. President Muizzu urged the public to treat those living with thalassemia with the same care and empathy as members of their own families. He further asserted that the government holds a primary duty to ensure that all affected individuals have guaranteed access to essential healthcare services, robust social protection, and equal opportunities to thrive. Observed globally, International Thalassemia Day aims to raise awareness about the genetic blood disorder, provide a support network for patients, and honor those who have lost their lives to the condition. The theme for this year, “Hidden no more: Finding the undiagnosed. Supporting the unseen,” focuses on the urgent need to identify undiagnosed cases. By bringing these hidden cases to light, the global health community aims to ensure that every affected individual receives the medical intervention and social support necessary to improve their quality of life.
