President Muizzu Calls for Honest Dialogue to Heal National Social Fractures

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged Maldivians to confront domestic challenges through sincere and honest dialogue, asserting that national solidarity is essential for sustainable reform. Speaking on the PSM News programme ‘Nation Chat’, the President expanded on his National Day address, emphasizing that the country cannot move forward without first acknowledging its current realities. President Muizzu expressed regret over the deterioration of the Maldives' traditionally compassionate social fabric, attributing the decline to polarizing political currents. He argued that in a small, tight-knit community, mutual respect is not optional but a necessity for survival and growth. He maintained that genuine development is measured not just by infrastructure, but by the progression of collective behavior and thinking. Drawing inspiration from the nation's history, the President called on citizens to emulate the resilience and leadership of Sultan al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam Siri Savadheetha Maha Radhun, known as Bodu Thakurufaanu. He stated that the responsibility of the current generation is to honor the struggles of those who saved the country by working together to advance the nation today. Addressing the role of political opposition, President Muizzu cautioned against rhetoric that transcends intellectual debate and enters the realm of state sabotage. He warned that unverified claims or actions that damage the critical tourism and fisheries sectors—the backbones of the Maldivian economy—are not merely acts of political opposition, but are detrimental to the country itself. He stressed that pursuing personal agendas at the expense of national stability undermines the state. On the legislative front, the President announced a commitment to strengthening the country's governance. He revealed that amendments to the legal framework will be submitted during the third session of the Parliament (the Majlis) this year. These changes are intended to establish a robust system of checks and balances to ensure that no legislation is enacted that conflicts with the principles of Islam.
