President Muizzu Calls for Stronger Accountability and Human Rights on Democracy Day

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to democratic governance, emphasizing that the protection of human rights and the accountability of those in power are essential for the nation's future. In a message commemorating the International Day of Democracy, the President stated that democracy only endures when citizens have a meaningful voice in shaping their country and when their fundamental rights are safeguarded. He stressed that the responsibility to protect and strengthen these democratic values must be passed down to each new generation. President Muizzu highlighted the inseparable link between democracy and human rights, identifying freedom of expression, equality, and human dignity as the core foundations of a functioning democratic society. He noted that without these elements, the essence of democratic participation is lost. To reinforce these principles, the President pledged that his administration will focus on increasing transparency and strengthening state institutions. A key priority will be expanding participation in national decision-making processes to ensure governance is more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the people. Specifically, the President underscored the need to create more opportunities for women and youth to take leadership roles and contribute to the national agenda. He argued that opening these pathways is critical for a sustainable and representative future. Concluding his message, the President called for a renewed national commitment to a system where power remains accountable to the public. He maintained that the true measure of a democracy is reflected in how a country is governed and the extent to which the rights of its citizens are protected.
