President Muizzu Champions Responsible Journalism to Empower Citizens and Ensure Transparency

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that responsible journalism is a cornerstone of a democratic society, essential for empowering citizens and ensuring government transparency. In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day, the President extended his greetings to media professionals across the Maldives, acknowledging their critical role in the nation's governance.
Describing the media as the "fourth estate," President Muizzu highlighted its function as a vital link between the various branches of state established under the Constitution. While reaffirming the high value placed on freedom of expression within Islam, the President noted that such freedom operates within ethical boundaries. He stressed the necessity of protecting societal interests, maintaining national peace, and safeguarding human dignity in all reporting.
The President stated that creating a safe and supportive environment for journalists remains a priority for his administration, reaffirming a steadfast commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of the press. He noted that his government is actively working to address systemic challenges facing the local media sector, specifically the struggle for financial sustainability within a small population.
Looking toward the future, President Muizzu referenced global shifts in the relationship between technology, journalism, and human rights. He revealed that initiatives under the "Maldives 2.0" programme are designed to modernize and improve the country’s information ecosystem, while simultaneously supporting the training and development of skilled media professionals.
The President concluded by stressing that independent journalism is key to fostering civic engagement and ensuring the public has access to factual reporting. He urged journalists to continue their pursuit of truth with integrity and reaffirmed the state's commitment to defending press freedom and the public's right to information.
