President Muizzu Claims End to Political Repression and Fear in Maldives

Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the era of political fear and repression, which he claims characterized previous administrations, has come to an end. Speaking during an appearance on PSM’s “Nation Chat,” the President stated that the Maldives has transitioned into a period where citizens are free to engage in political activity without fear of state retribution. Addressing the issue of political imprisonment, President Muizzu highlighted that such practices were common in the past but have ceased under his leadership. He emphasized that his administration has not designated any political prisoners to date, reflecting his broader goal of establishing a stable political environment where democratic participation is protected. While championing the right to political engagement, the President clarified that such activities must remain within the legal boundaries of the Constitution and align with Islamic principles. He maintained that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it is subject to limits that apply equally to every citizen to ensure social and legal order. President Muizzu also addressed the role of the opposition in a functioning democracy. He argued that a responsible opposition should balance its duty to hold the government accountable with a willingness to support policies that benefit the nation. However, he claimed that the current political landscape lacks a truly responsible opposition party. Concluding his remarks, the President urged senior politicians to prioritize national stability over personal grievances and political revenge. He stressed that the maturity of the country's democracy depends on leaders placing the national interest above partisan conflict to ensure long-term stability for the Maldives.
