President Muizzu Claims Maldives Lacks Responsible Opposition Focused on National Interest

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the Maldives currently lacks a responsible opposition political party capable of offering constructive alternatives to the government's policies. Speaking on the role of political opposition in national governance, the President argued that current opposition parties are driven by self-interest rather than a commitment to the country's progress. President Muizzu emphasized that his administration prioritizes the nation and its citizens above all else, stating that every government policy is designed to benefit the general public. He noted that while democracy is frequently discussed, the practical application of a responsible opposition—one that provides substantial responses or better alternatives to government initiatives—is entirely missing from the current political landscape. According to the President, opposition parties have failed to demonstrate how they could improve the services provided to citizens or offer a superior vision for the country. He criticized the lack of sincerity and friendship within these parties, suggesting that their actions are motivated by personal gain rather than national priority. Turning to issues of accountability, President Muizzu highlighted several high-profile corruption cases linked to previous administrations. He specifically cited the "ventilator theft" case during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing it as a major embezzlement of public funds. He also referenced the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal, characterizing such acts as a betrayal of the Maldivian people. The President called upon independent institutions to conduct thorough investigations into the MMPRC scandal and other alleged thefts to restore the rights of citizens. He pledged that his administration would provide full cooperation to these bodies to ensure that those responsible for the misuse of public funds are held accountable. By framing the opposition as ineffective and self-serving, the President reinforced his administration's stance on transparency and the necessity of purging corruption from the state's financial history to ensure a stable future for the Maldives.
