President Muizzu Claims Narcotics Corruption Eradicated Within Maldives Police Force
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the illicit influence of narcotics within the Maldives Police Service has been thoroughly eliminated, marking a significant shift in the nation's law enforcement capabilities.
Speaking on the third episode of 'The Pulse' podcast series, the President detailed the systemic changes implemented over the last two and a half years to rescue the Maldives from its drug epidemic. He emphasized that the administration's primary objective was to build a framework capable of rooting out narcotics violations from within the police departments themselves to empower the force.
Upon taking office, President Muizzu conducted an initial review that revealed deep-seated issues within the police's drug enforcement division. He specifically highlighted cases where seized narcotics were leaking back into society and where corrupt behaviors were widespread among officers.
"Previously, upon assuming office and assessment of the situation, adverse influences were prevalent within the police's drug enforcement apparatus," the President stated. He asserted that the opportunities for such nefarious activities have now been dismantled, ensuring that corruption within the organization is no longer a systemic threat.
Beyond internal reform, the President noted that administrative efforts to combat gang criminality and drug-related offenses are yielding tangible results. He reported a decrease in the number of individuals participating in gang activities and a substantial decline in gang-related homicides.
President Muizzu concluded by stating that various government agencies are now operating collaboratively. He expressed confidence that this coordinated approach will ultimately lead to a permanent resolution of the narcotics crisis facing the country.
