President Muizzu Completes Gaadhiffushi Land Reclamation Project in Eight Days

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the completion of a rapid land reclamation project in Gaadhiffushi, Thaa Atoll, with 11 hectares of new land dredged in just eight days. The project, which began on April 10, aims to alleviate critical land scarcity for the island's residents and provide a foundation for future socio-economic growth. Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office, President Muizzu emphasized that the administration's development agenda remains independent of political cycles or electoral outcomes. This stance follows the recent Gaadhiffushi council and women’s development committee elections on April 4, in which the President's party, the Peoples National Congress (PNC), did not secure any seats. "The dredging work has been completed. I will continue to implement the projects in the islands regardless of the election results," the President stated, reinforcing his commitment to national development over partisan interests. The technical scope of the project involved the dredging of 390 cubic metres of sand. To safeguard the newly created land and protect the island's shoreline from erosion, the government integrated comprehensive coastal defense infrastructure. This includes a 100-metre rock breakwater, a 704-metre rock revetment, and a 100-metre groyne. Such infrastructural enhancements are vital for island communities in the Maldives, where limited land area often hinders residential and commercial expansion. By expanding the usable land mass of Gaadhiffushi, the government expects to create new opportunities for housing and local business development, improving the overall quality of life for the community in Thaa Atoll.
