President Muizzu Condemns Attack on Male’ City Mayor During Political Protest

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has strongly condemned an attempted attack on Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, asserting that the government is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all citizens. The President’s Office issued the statement after footage of the incident, which occurred during a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest in Male’ City, circulated online. The government emphasized that elected officials must not be subjected to attacks or obstruction, regardless of whether they are engaged in political activities or their private lives. Addressing the aftermath, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef dismissed allegations made by Mayor Azim suggesting government involvement in the attack. Shareef described the accusations as baseless and false, questioning the evidence used to support such claims. He reiterated that the state has no link to the incident. Further complicating the matter, the spokesperson expressed concern that neither the Mayor nor the MDP had officially reported the attack to the police. Shareef noted that such omissions hinder the police's legal mandate to ensure public safety. Consequently, the police launched an investigation on their own initiative after viewing the social media videos. To ensure the Mayor's future safety, the government reminded him that he is eligible for state-provided security upon request. The spokesperson assured that the police conduct independent threat assessments and will arrange the necessary protection should a risk be identified.
