President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended his congratulations to Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, following his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In a statement shared via social media, President Muizzu described the election as a proud achievement for both Bangladesh and the wider South Asian region. He emphasized that the upcoming session, under Dr. Rahman's leadership, will serve as a critical platform for UN member states to address global challenges and wished the Foreign Minister success in steering the assembly.
Echoing these sentiments, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam also congratulated her Bangladeshi counterpart. Minister Adam expressed confidence in Dr. Rahman's ability to lead effectively through international cooperation and reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to working closely with Bangladesh to advance shared priorities during the assembly.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to begin in September, bringing together representatives from 193 member states. As the primary deliberative organ of the United Nations, the General Assembly is responsible for discussing pivotal global political, economic, and social issues.
Beyond its policy discussions, the UNGA holds significant administrative and governance powers. These include approving the overall UN budget, appointing non-permanent members to the Security Council, and recommending the appointment of the UN Secretary-General. The election of a regional leader to the presidency is often seen as a significant diplomatic milestone for the global south, potentially shifting the focus toward issues affecting developing nations.
