President Muizzu Defies Opposition Claims with Successful Launch of PayPal Services

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the successful launch of PayPal services in the Maldives has debunked opposition claims that such an integration was impossible. The digital payment service became available to the public on June 15, operating through a partnership with Ooredoo m-Faisaa.
Speaking on the second episode of PSM News’s 'Nation Chat' podcast, the President emphasized that bringing PayPal to the Maldives was a core pledge of his presidential manifesto. He noted that his administration took a proactive approach by engaging directly with PayPal representatives, a strategy he contrasted with the methods of previous governments.
President Muizzu highlighted a pattern of skepticism from previous administrations, claiming that some officials had dismissed the feasibility of critical infrastructure and financial integration projects, including the construction of bridges. He revealed that the current process took approximately one year of close cooperation with PayPal to finalize. While the company selected Ooredoo as its local partner, the government acted as a facilitator to ensure the service's successful implementation.
The President described this launch as the first step in a broader strategy to modernize the nation's financial landscape. He stated that the government plans to introduce further digital services through PayPal and other global platforms to foster a more robust digital ecosystem.
Expanding the digital economy remains a primary government priority, with the administration targeting a 15 percent contribution to the national GDP from digital sectors. President Muizzu noted that this digital transformation is specifically designed to empower the youth and those working within creative industries, while strengthening the Maldives' overall national digitalization efforts.
By establishing partnerships with international tech giants, the government expects to create new economic opportunities and streamline financial transactions for residents and businesses alike, moving the Maldives closer to its goal of a fully integrated digital economy.
