President Muizzu Demands Global Protection for Humanitarian Workers Amid Gaza Crisis
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for the urgent protection of humanitarian personnel worldwide, asserting that the Maldives has a moral duty to oppose violence against those serving vulnerable populations. In a message marking World Humanitarian Day on August 19, the President expressed firm solidarity with aid workers who risk their lives amidst escalating global conflicts, displacement, and climate-driven disasters.
President Muizzu highlighted the critical collapse of humanitarian protections in Gaza, describing the blockades and targeted violence against relief workers as grave violations of international law. Condemning these actions, he reaffirmed the Maldives' unwavering support for the Palestinian people and called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to end the suffering.
The President emphasized that small island nations are particularly dependent on a rules-based international order where international law is applied equally to all states. He reminded the global community that as a party to the Fourth Geneva Convention, the Maldives remains steadfastly committed to international humanitarian law and the safeguarding of civilians and aid personnel.
Calling for a global commitment to the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence, the President urged all nations to respect humanitarian operations. He paid a poignant tribute to the workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, stating that such sacrifices must compel the international community to guarantee the safety of those providing life-saving assistance.
World Humanitarian Day is observed annually to honor those killed or injured in crisis zones and to recognize the courage of workers operating in the world's most dangerous environments. President Muizzu reiterated these calls for global accountability and protection in a statement shared via his official X account on Tuesday.
