President Muizzu Establishes Citizens Complaints Bureau to Enhance Government Accountability
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has formally established the Citizens Complaints Bureau, a new initiative designed to create a direct communication channel between the Maldivian public and the state. The bureau serves as a primary mechanism for citizens to voice concerns and influence government policy, aligning with the President's pledge to govern based on public sentiment.
Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef stated that the bureau aims to ensure citizen concerns are not only heard but actively resolved. By acting as a conduit for feedback, the office intends to reshape governance by making the state more responsive to the needs and opinions of the people across the archipelago.
To manage the expected volume of submissions, the bureau will integrate advanced technology, including an AI-driven sorting system. This tool will automatically categorize complaints and route them to the appropriate government agencies. For instance, issues regarding housing will be directed immediately to the Ministry of Housing, ensuring that the correct officials identify and address the problem without bureaucratic delay.
Addressing potential concerns regarding privacy and security, the spokesperson provided a firm assurance that no retaliatory action will be taken against individuals who file complaints. He emphasized that the bureau's success depends heavily on public participation and an atmosphere of trust and openness.
First announced during the annual Presidential Address, the bureau was officially established on April 16. Full operations are scheduled to begin in mid-2024. To ensure accessibility for residents on distant islands, the President’s Office confirmed the launch of a dedicated 24-hour call center, providing a constant point of contact for all citizens regardless of their location.
