President Muizzu Establishes New Agency to Combat Greater Malé Traffic Congestion

World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office to address the escalating traffic crisis within the capital region. Operating as an agency under the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, the new office is tasked with creating a coordinated response to the region's growing vehicle density. The decision, announced via a presidential directive on Sunday, was made under the authority vested in the President by Article 116(a) of the Constitution. The move comes as Greater Malé struggles with increasing road congestion, which has hindered mobility and impacted daily productivity for thousands of residents and commuters. Governed by a dedicated board, the office will collaborate with various state authorities to formulate and implement urgent programs designed to ease traffic flow. Beyond immediate relief, the agency is mandated to advise on long-term policies to manage the surge in private vehicle ownership and modernize the region's aging transport network. Key priorities for the agency include the expansion of parking infrastructure and the development of innovative mobility solutions to reduce reliance on traditional road transport. By centralizing these efforts, the government aims to create a more sustainable and efficient urban transit system for the densely populated hub. Under Directive No. 13/2026, the President's Office has officially assigned correspondence code 1142 to the new entity, marking the start of its operational integration into the state's administrative framework.
