President Muizzu Fast-Tracks ThilaMale’ Bridge Completion Within One Year

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government's commitment to uninterrupted infrastructure growth, citing the rapid progress of the ThilaMale’ Bridge as a primary example of this strategy. Speaking during a site visit to the bridge connecting Male' and Vilimale', the President emphasized that resuming stalled projects is a cornerstone of his administration's agenda. Upon taking office, the current administration identified numerous critical infrastructure projects across the Maldives that had been halted or slowed. President Muizzu noted that accelerating these works became an immediate priority. He pointed to the successful completion of the new terminal at Velana International Airport and essential upgrades at Hanimaadhoo Airport as evidence of this proactive approach. Regarding the ThilaMale’ Bridge, the President revealed that progress was sluggish before the current government intervened. Through strategic cooperation with the Government of India, the administration has successfully accelerated the construction timeline. President Muizzu expressed his gratitude to the Indian Government, the Indian High Commissioner, and the relevant construction ministry for their pivotal support in overcoming previous delays. The project contractor, Afcons, has significantly increased the pace of work, and the bridge structure is now fully connected. The President announced that the government aims to complete all remaining works on the bridge within one year, providing a vital transit link between the two islands. Beyond the immediate engineering goals, President Muizzu described the bridge as a symbol of the enduring and close relationship between the Maldives and India. He highlighted India as an essential partner in the nation's development, noting that such large-scale infrastructure projects reinforce the diplomatic and economic ties between the two neighbors.
