President Muizzu Forms Special Commission to Investigate Maritime Boundary Loss in Folevahy Case

Politics ·
President Dr. Muhammad Muizzu has formed a special presidential commission to investigate the actions of the previous government concerning the case submitted to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) regarding the delimitation of the maritime boundary between the Maldives and Mauritius. The commission, established under Article 115 (G) of the Constitution, is named the "Presidential Special Commission Established to Investigate the Actions Taken by the Maldives in ITLOS Case Number 28." The Office of the President stated that international experts appointed to study the ITLOS decision have suggested that a large portion of the Maldives' maritime area was lost due to how the matter was handled. This loss is expected to severely impact the Maldives' fishing industry and the richness of its marine and seabed resources. The seven-member commission includes Ahmed Shakir (N.D.Sh.A.) as Chairman, Abdul Aziz Yusuf, Dr. Amina Shafiyah Adam, Dr. Abdulmuhsin Mohamed, Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Muhammad Sadique, Ahmed Aleemaniq, and Fatimath Minhath Izzath. The commission's responsibilities include investigating how state employees, advisory bodies, and involved officials acted in submitting and progressing the case, examining legal negligence, determining penalties, reviewing document preservation, and making recommendations to prevent future occurrences. The commission will remain in place until the President determines all tasks are completed.
