President Muizzu Hails Sinamalé Bridge as Symbol of Enduring China-Maldives Ties

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge as a powerful symbol of the enduring bilateral relations between the Maldives and China. Speaking during an on-site inspection on Sunday, the President marked the eighth anniversary of the bridge's official opening and commencement of operations. The Sinamalé Bridge remains one of the most significant infrastructure milestones in Maldivian history. The marine link effectively connects the capital island of Malé with the airport island of Hulhulé and the suburban hub of Hulhumalé. Despite initial domestic skepticism regarding the feasibility of spanning the open sea, the project was delivered ahead of schedule. During the visit, President Muizzu was joined by Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, and Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua. The President reviewed an archival photograph exhibition before conducting a formal tour of the structure. “More than infrastructure, it represents the trust, solidarity and shared aspirations that bind the Maldives and China together,” President Muizzu stated via social media. He emphasized that cooperation under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping will continue to create expanding opportunities for both nations. The bridge was officially opened on August 30, 2018, a period during which President Muizzu served as the Housing Minister. The 1.38-kilometre structure is 20.3 metres wide, featuring two lanes for four-wheeled vehicles and two dedicated lanes for motorcycles to alleviate{ congestion in the capital. The project's total capital expenditure reached USD 300 million. This was financed through a strategic combination of a USD 100 million grant from China, a USD 170 million loan, and a USD 30 million allocation from the Maldivian state.
