President Muizzu Hails Workers as Driving Force Behind Maldives' Future Progress

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the Maldivian workforce is the primary catalyst for the nation's progress and the essential key to achieving its long-term aspirations. In a message shared via social media to mark International Workers' Day on May 1, the President extended his greetings to laborers across the archipelago, recognizing their indispensable contributions to national development. He emphasized that every individual—whether working to provide for their family or serving the state—deserves profound respect and recognition. President Muizzu described workers as dedicated contributors whose collective efforts continue to shape the trajectory of the country's growth. He noted that the modern infrastructure and societal progress seen in the Maldives today are direct results of the commitment and labor of its people. Looking ahead, the President stated that this same workforce will play a central role in realizing the hopes and ambitions of the Maldivian people. He expressed deep appreciation for those working across all sectors, thanking them for their continued service to the nation. International Workers' Day is observed annually on May 1, a tradition established by the International Socialist Workers’ Congress in 1889 to commemorate labor protests linked to the Haymarket affair in Chicago. The Maldives has steadily strengthened its commitment to promoting workers' rights over the last two decades. The day was officially recognized in 2006 and subsequently declared a public holiday in 2011, cementing the state's acknowledgment of the labor force's importance to the national economy.
