President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and his spouse departed for Pakistan on Tuesday for an official visit scheduled to last until Thursday. During the visit, President Muizzu is expected to meet Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials. Pakistan's media has reported that the Maldives and Pakistan are set to sign 12 memoranda of understanding during the trip, including one on military cooperation. The visit comes after 16 lawmakers from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), including People's Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah, travelled to Pakistan last month. During that visit, Speaker Abdul Raheem met Pakistan's Chief of Defence Force Field Marshal Syed Ahmed Munir, who also serves as Chief of Army Staff. In a separate development, former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail departed for India on the same day.
