President Muizzu Inaugurates Japanese-Funded Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Villimalé

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated a newly developed Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Villimalé, establishing a centralized hub to safeguard lives and property during maritime and aviation emergencies. Operated by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the facility serves as the primary nerve center for coordinating search and rescue operations across the archipelago. The project was financed by the Japanese government, with technological resources provided by Australia and coordination support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. While the foundation stone was laid in June 2022, the project faced several construction delays. Upon taking office, President Muizzu prioritized the completion of the center as part of a broader policy to modernize and augment the capabilities of the MNDF Coastguard. The new facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art operations room designed for real-time emergency management. Beyond active rescue coordination, the building includes dedicated classrooms and an auditorium to facilitate advanced training programs and human resource development for rescue personnel. MNDF officials highlighted that the center will significantly fortify civilian protection. The facility evolves a legacy of maritime safety in the Maldives that began with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System center in January 2006, which was later rebranded in 2012. Data released by military representatives underscores the critical nature of this infrastructure. Over the past decade, the center and its area commands have responded to 3,713 emergencies, resulting in the successful rescue of 8,359 citizens and the recovery of numerous vessels and properties. This new facility is expected to increase the efficiency and reach of these life-saving operations.
