President Muizzu Launches PayPal Services to Connect Maldivian Creators to Global Markets

World ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially launched PayPal services in the Maldives, fulfilling a key campaign pledge and signaling a transformative shift for the nation’s digital economy. The move aims to remove long-standing financial barriers that have hindered local entrepreneurs from accessing international customers. Speaking at the launch ceremony, President Muizzu challenged local innovators and creators to leverage the secure online payment platform to establish a firm foothold in the global marketplace. He noted that the absence of easy, secure payment channels had previously been the primary obstacle for Maldivian talent attempting to export skills and products worldwide. The rollout is a central component of a broader strategic blueprint to transition the Maldives toward a digitally-driven economy. The administration has set an ambitious target to increase the digital sector's contribution to the national GDP to at least 15 percent by 2030. This goal is bolstered by the Dhivaru International Submarine Cable project, developed in partnership with Google, which provides the high-speed connectivity necessary for modern e-commerce. Drawing a parallel to the nation's history, the President remarked that while Maldivian ancestors once connected the archipelago to the world through maritime trade, the modern generation will do so through digital links. He asserted that the country now possesses the advanced infrastructure required to support cutting-edge innovation and global commerce. To further support this ecosystem, the government is developing the 'Creator Hub,' a state-of-the-art complex scheduled to open on November 11. The facility will provide modern studios and co-working spaces for creative professionals. Additionally, regional facilities are being established across the atolls to ensure that citizens outside the capital have equal access to the tools needed to market their products globally. President Muizzu concluded by urging Maldivian artisans, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs to utilize these new resources to showcase local ingenuity and compete on the international stage.
