President Muizzu Launches Weekly Public Meetings to Fast-Track Citizen Grievances

World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a new weekly initiative allowing citizens to meet with him personally to accelerate the resolution of local issues and government service delays. Speaking during the second episode of PSM News’ 'Nation Chat' programme, the President detailed a structured approach to direct engagement. Under the new arrangement, the President will hold one or two sessions per week, providing slots for ten to fifteen families per constituency to present their concerns directly to the head of state. The move comes as a response to public demand for direct access and a rebuttal to opposition claims that the administration has failed to act on feedback gathered during nation-wide tours. President Muizzu emphasized that his team is actively processing applications and letters submitted by citizens, asserting that no proposal—aside from large-scale infrastructure projects like housing complexes—has remained undecided. While acknowledging that time constraints have previously limited his ability to meet every individual, the President stated that he continues to monitor complaints through ministerial officials within the President’s Office. He noted that while previous island visits focused primarily on consultations with local councils and institutions, future tours will be designed to facilitate more direct interaction with the general public. “We will examine each application, respond to it, and help where there are delays in government services,” the President said, adding that the new formalised programme will ensure a broad cross-section of the public is heard. This initiative marks a shift toward a more accessible executive branch, aiming to bridge the gap between the central government in Malé and the dispersed populations of the atolls. By transitioning from institutional meetings to family-level consultations, the administration seeks to identify specific bureaucratic bottlenecks that hinder the delivery of essential services to Maldivian citizens.
