President Muizzu Leads Business Forum in Colombo to Attract Sri Lankan Investment

Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu led a high-level delegation to Colombo for the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum, an initiative designed to showcase emerging investment opportunities to foreign stakeholders. The event, attended by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, marks the 10th such forum organized by the Maldives to diversify its economic partnerships. Approximately 300 delegates, comprising prominent investors and business leaders from both nations, gathered to explore collaborative ventures. The forum focused heavily on key strategic sectors, with detailed presentations on opportunities within the tourism, fisheries, and agriculture industries, which remain the backbone of the Maldivian economy. Central to the discussions were several large-scale infrastructure and development projects currently underway in the Maldives. Investors were briefed on the Sustainable Township Investment Project, the ambitious Ras Malé project, and the planned port development in Thilafushi. These projects represent the government's vision for urban expansion and enhanced logistics capabilities to support growing trade. This forum is a critical component of the Maldives' broader strategy to strengthen bilateral economic ties with Sri Lanka. It follows a reciprocal business forum held in the Maldives during the Sri Lankan President’s official visit last year, signaling a sustained commitment to mutual growth. To further integrate into the global economy, the Maldives continues to host similar investment forums internationally. The government has previously conducted successful outreach programs in China, the United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, aiming to secure foreign direct investment across various sectors of the national economy.
