Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described the Maldives as a highly favorable market for foreign investors, highlighting a wide range of opportunities from industry and construction to education and healthcare. Speaking at the Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad on 22 October 2026, the President noted that despite the country's small population of around 500,000, the Maldives attracts over two million tourists annually, making it a market far larger than its resident population. He outlined plans to expand bilateral trade with Pakistan to US$200 million within the next two years. President Muizzu also announced that Maldivian, the national airline, will soon commence flights to Karachi to improve connectivity and ease trade and travel between the two countries. He invited Pakistani investors to explore opportunities in modern food processing and climate-resilient farming technologies, underscoring the importance of food security for the island nation. President Muizzu is currently on an official visit to Pakistan.
