President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed deep sorrow following the death of a Maldives Police Service officer who passed away while on duty during a sea operation on Wednesday night. Sub-Inspector Ahmed Asif was serving aboard Police Launch 57 when he was reported missing. A search operation was immediately launched, and his body was subsequently recovered from the water. Medical personnel at the Mathiveri Health Centre confirmed that Asif had passed away before arriving at the facility. In a message shared on social media, President Muizzu extended his heartfelt condolences to Asif’s family and colleagues. He prayed for the bereaved family to find patience and strength during this difficult time and asked for Allah’s mercy and eternal blessings for the fallen officer. At the time of the incident, Asif held the rank of Senior Sergeant. In recognition of his service and the circumstances of his passing, the Maldives Police Service has posthumously promoted him to the rank of Sub-Inspector of Police. The tragedy highlights the inherent risks faced by security personnel operating in the Maldives' challenging maritime environment. The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently ongoing to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
