President Muizzu Nominates Thoriq Ibrahim as Permanent Representative to IRENA

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim to serve as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The nomination has been officially forwarded to the Parliament for review and approval. Under the provisions of the Constitution and the Foreign Service Act, the President must seek parliamentary consent before appointing representatives to international organizations. The nomination has already been referred to the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee. Mr. Ibrahim's appointment will be finalized once the committee completes its evaluation and the nomination receives a majority vote from the Majlis. Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim brings extensive expertise in environmental policy and renewable energy to the role. He previously served as the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy before his most recent appointment as the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Given his professional background, the administration expects his leadership to strengthen the Maldives' influence and voice within the international energy community. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, IRENA is a leading intergovernmental organization consisting of 169 member states and the European Union. The agency focuses on accelerating the global transition to sustainable energy. The Maldives has been a member of IRENA since its inception, consistently utilizing the platform to advocate for climate resilience and sustainable energy transitions. As a low-lying island nation, the Maldives views its partnership with IRENA as critical to mitigating the impacts of climate change and securing a sustainable energy future.
