President Muizzu Nominates Two Candidates for Human Rights Commission Membership
World ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted two names to the Maldivian Parliament for appointment as members of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), following a public application process initiated last July.
The nominations come as the term for one current commission member is set to expire in October. After reviewing the applicants, the President's Office identified two candidates who met the strict eligibility requirements for the role.
The nominees are Shamoon Hameed of H. Meenaz and lawyer Samaau Ahmed Najeeb of Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Ms. Najeeb is an incumbent member of the HRCM whose current term concludes on October 3.
Mr. Hameed brings significant institutional experience to the nomination, having previously served in senior leadership roles within the commission, including a tenure as Secretary General.
The appointment process has now transitioned to the legislative branch. The nominations have been referred to the Parliament's Gender and Human Rights Committee for detailed consideration. Following the committee's review, the final appointment will be determined through a vote in the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament.
