President Muizzu Nominates Two Candidates for MIRA Tax Commissioner Role

World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated two candidates to lead the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) as the Commissioner General of Taxation. The move follows the resignation of Hassan Zareer, who vacated the post to assume the role of Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises. In a formal communication to the Parliament, President Muizzu confirmed that the nominees were selected from a pool of applicants who responded to a public call for the position. The President stated that both individuals possess the necessary qualifications and suitability for the appointment. The nominees are Mohamed Haleem Abdul Ghafoor and Fathimath Ameeza. Haleem, hailing from Thakandhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, holds a Master's degree in Professional Accountancy from the University of London. He brings extensive experience in the accounting sector and currently serves as the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives. Fathimath Ameeza, from Gadhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, holds a Master's degree in Accounting from Monash University in Australia. She is already well-versed in the authority's inner workings, currently serving as MIRA's Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation. The nomination process now moves to the legislative branch. The candidates' files have been referred to the Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee for comprehensive review. The committee is expected to conduct interviews with both nominees to assess their vision and competence before submitting a final recommendation to the full assembly. The appointment will ultimately be decided through a vote by the members of the Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament). The selection of the next Tax Commissioner is seen as a critical appointment for the administration, as MIRA remains the primary body responsible for the country's domestic revenue mobilization and tax administration.
