President Muizzu Offers Land Plots in Exchange for Social Housing Flats
Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a new policy allowing recipients of one-room social housing units to surrender their apartments in exchange for eligibility to apply for land plots. The proposal, presented during a meeting with Maafannu district residents, aims to address Malé's persistent housing crisis while expanding land ownership opportunities.
The president emphasized that this measure seeks to reduce overcrowding in the capital while providing more housing options. He detailed ongoing infrastructure projects supporting these initiatives, noting that two dredgers are currently reclaiming land for Hulhumalé Phase III, with completion expected by year's end. The equipment will then be redeployed to Gulhifalhu, where reclamation is projected to conclude within three months.
Land distribution has already begun in non-restricted zones, with funding secured through the national budget. Attention has also turned to Rasmalé, where the administration has established a framework to issue 15,000 plots. Applications will open in January, prioritizing first-time homeowners aged eighteen and above. If demand exceeds the initial 10,000 plots, a second phase will follow.
President Muizzu also pledged compensation for individuals whose newlywed flats were revoked under the previous administration. He concluded that the Rasmalé distribution represents a comprehensive solution to Malé's housing challenges, marking a significant step toward addressing the capital's accommodation shortages.
