President Muizzu Outlines Choice Between Constructive and Destructive Paths for Maldives

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the Maldives stands at a critical crossroads, facing a definitive choice between a constructive path toward prosperity and a destructive path of decline. Speaking at a gathering following the People’s National Congress (PNC) victory in the Meedhoo Council presidential election, the President argued that the divergence between these two political ideologies is now transparent to the public. Drawing a sharp contrast between his administration and previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) governments, President Muizzu accused past leadership of inflicting systemic harm on the nation. He stated that his current government efforts are focused on rectifying this damage and reversing policies that he claims endangered the country’s independence and sovereignty, particularly regarding the Maldives' maritime territory. The President attributed the PNC's growing public trust and recent electoral successes to a platform that prioritizes national interest and religious values. He emphasized that his administration's core pillars are peace, security, and development, asserting that government decisions are now guided by the needs of the Maldives rather than the interests of foreign powers. Beyond geopolitics, the President criticized the MDP's approach to religion, describing it as inconsistent with Islamic principles. He maintained that Islam remains the foundation of his government’s policy-making and social governance. Addressing social challenges, President Muizzu highlighted current initiatives to combat the prevalence of drug abuse and vaping, issues he claimed were neglected by previous administrations. He noted that these efforts have yielded fruitful results, with the government focusing on guiding the youth through the strengthening of patriotic values and religious understanding.
