President Muizzu Plans Legal Framework to Ensure Continuity of National Development Goals

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the formulation of a long-term national development plan designed to provide the Maldives with a stable trajectory, ensuring that critical infrastructure and social projects continue regardless of political transitions. Speaking on PSM’s 'Nation Chat' programme, the President identified the abrupt halting of major projects and shifts in national direction following changes in government as primary obstacles to the country's growth. To combat this instability, the administration is developing legislation to provide legal protection for the master plan, preventing future governments from unilaterally altering the nation's strategic direction. The initiative is part of a broader ambition to elevate the Maldives from the category of developing nations to developed status by 2040. President Muizzu first declared this target during his address to the 2024 United Nations General Assembly, selecting the global stage to signal the Maldives' aspirations to the international community. The forthcoming development master plan is being crafted with public participation to ensure it reflects the needs of the citizenry. The framework focuses on five key pillars: the preservation of Islamic values and culture, economic rebuilding, the improvement of livelihoods, social development and environmental sustainability, and the strengthening of institutional management. By enshrining these goals in law, the President aims to create a unified national vision that transcends partisan politics. This approach seeks to provide a predictable environment for investors and a consistent roadmap for citizens, ensuring that the journey toward 2040 remains uninterrupted by electoral cycles.
