President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving the professional environment and resources available to educators across the Maldives. In a message marking World Teachers’ Day on October 5, the President emphasized that providing teachers with the necessary tools and conditions is essential for them to fulfill their vital role in shaping the nation's youth.
The President paid tribute to the dedication and lasting influence of educators, acknowledging their ability to help students navigate a rapidly changing global landscape. Expressing gratitude for their sacrifice and service, he stated that the government views it as a fundamental responsibility to ensure that those in the teaching profession are well-supported.
To achieve this, President Muizzu outlined several key priorities for the administration. The government intends to focus on enhancing teacher wellbeing and reducing excessive workloads to prevent burnout. Additionally, the President highlighted plans to improve general working conditions and strengthen inclusive education frameworks, specifically expanding the capacity of teachers to support children with disabilities.
According to the President, investing in educators strengthens the very foundation upon which the nation grows. He called for greater professional recognition and sustained investment in the workforce to create an education system where every teacher is empowered to help every child reach their full potential.
World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5. The tradition began in 1994 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1966 recommendation by the International Labour Organisation and UNESCO regarding the Status of Teachers, aiming to highlight the challenges facing the profession and the need for global standards in teacher support.
