President Muizzu Pledges Completion of All Development Projects by 2028

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to completing all pledged development projects by the second quarter of 2028, asserting that the administration is delivering on its promises despite inheriting a strained economy. Addressing a rally held by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) in Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll, the President emphasized that the government is simultaneously executing infrastructure upgrades and implementing measures to stabilize the national economy. In Ukulhas specifically, the President highlighted the ongoing addition of two hectares of land, a critical move aimed at alleviating the island's acute housing shortage. Recognizing the importance of local tourism to the Ukulhas economy, President Muizzu noted that he had consulted with local business owners regarding their concerns. He specifically addressed the need for beach protection, announcing that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project is nearing completion and work is expected to commence within two weeks. The President stated that this localized focus is part of a broader nationwide strategy. Major land reclamation, housing, and infrastructure initiatives are currently underway across the Maldives. To complement these physical developments, the administration is providing loans and economic opportunities tailored for women and youth to enhance sustainable livelihoods. President Muizzu clarified that the government's portfolio includes both general national infrastructure and specific promises made to individual islands during his presidential campaign. He maintained that the current pace of delivery remains high despite the "ailing" state of the economy at the start of his term. Supporting his claims with data from his Independence Day speech, the President revealed that 590 projects were completed during the first two years and eight months of his administration, with 1,635 projects currently in progress. For context, he noted that previous administrations completed 285 and 321 projects, respectively, during the same timeframe.
