President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the strong diplomatic and cultural bonds between the Maldives and Sri Lanka during a state banquet held in his honor by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka. The event is a centerpiece of President Muizzu’s first official state visit to the neighboring nation since assuming office.
Accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation, President Muizzu praised the "warm welcome and generous hospitality" provided by the Sri Lankan government. He characterized Sri Lanka as a "close and trusted neighbour," noting that the relationship has been forged over decades of cooperation in healthcare, education, and deep-rooted people-to-people connections.
During the banquet, the President emphasized that while formal diplomatic ties are essential, the true meaning of the relationship lies in the kinship between the citizens of both nations. He expressed gratitude for Sri Lanka's historical support of Maldivian development and signaled a desire to modernize this partnership.
Looking toward the future, President Muizzu identified several priority sectors for enhanced cooperation. These include digital transformation, renewable energy, sustainable tourism, and ocean conservation. He stressed that these initiatives are critical for the growth and resilience of both island nations.
Addressing the shared existential threat of climate change, the President called for increased collaboration, joint advocacy, and innovative solutions to protect their vulnerable coastlines. He expressed confidence that bilateral ties will continue to deepen as both countries navigate these global challenges together.
The state visit, which runs from May 3 to May 6, 2026, included meetings with senior officials and cabinet ministers from both administrations to discuss strategic alignment and mutual growth.
