President Muizzu Pledges Faster Project Completion Despite Global Economic Hurdles

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government is accelerating the implementation of national development projects, with a significant number expected to reach completion by the end of next year. Despite persisting global economic challenges, the President emphasized a commitment to fulfilling all promises made to the islands. Speaking on PSM’s 'Nation Chat' programme, President Muizzu detailed a strategy to strengthen state-owned companies tasked with executing major infrastructure. Central to this plan is increasing the capacity of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The President highlighted the need to explore external financing to secure heavy equipment and essential materials without delay, which would fast-track harbour development and land reclamation across the archipelago. To bolster these efforts, a high-capacity dredger—three times the size of MTCC’s current largest vessel—is expected to arrive in the Maldives by the end of this year. This upgrade aims to rapidly initiate land reclamation in islands where work has not yet commenced. Infrastructure capacity is further being expanded through the merger of the Road Development Company (RDC) with MTCC. With new machinery already procured, road construction projects are slated to begin within the next two to three months. The President noted that these structural changes to project management mean many major works will be finalized by 2027. Addressing stalled essential services, President Muizzu noted that several water and sewerage projects were dormant or underfunded when his administration took office. He assured the public that these critical utilities are now being prioritized, with completion targeted for late this year and throughout next year. Beyond major infrastructure, the administration is continuing smaller-scale community projects, including the construction of mosques, police stations, school buildings, outdoor gyms, parks, and waste management centres. The President reiterated his administration's core commitment to ensuring equal development and providing essential facilities for all citizens, regardless of their island's size or location.
