President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed to enhancing the recognition of young esports athletes and expanding opportunities for growth within the digital sports sector. The President emphasized that the achievements of youth in competitive gaming deserve formal acknowledgement and systemic support to ensure the industry's advancement. The announcement came during the fourth episode of 'Rayithunge Adu,' a public engagement series designed to provide citizens with a direct channel to discuss pressing concerns with the Head of State. During the session, a young esports player highlighted a critical gap in the current sports framework, noting the absence of an official esports category in the government’s national sports awards. “We are not receiving proper recognition,” the youth told the President, explaining that previous inquiries regarding the lack of esports awards were met with claims that the sector was not formally recognized in the Maldives. He urged the administration to elevate the status of esports to reflect its growing popularity and the dedication of its practitioners. President Muizzu acknowledged the rapid growth of the sector, agreeing that the current level of attention is insufficient. “It is something that needs to be done. There are indeed many young people involved in this field,” the President stated, affirming that the government will prioritize the integration of esports into the national sporting landscape. This commitment aligns with broader government initiatives announced in the President's annual address, which includes the development of a dedicated esports center and arcade, alongside an activities complex for children. The President confirmed that the administration is currently finalizing the team responsible for executing these site works. These efforts are part of a larger strategic plan to improve national mental and physical wellbeing through enhanced sports infrastructure. By investing in both traditional and digital sports, the government aims to strengthen social connectivity among the youth and promote a healthier, more active population across the atolls.
