President Muizzu Pledges National Football Growth to Unite Island Communities

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldivian government's commitment to advancing football and sports as vital tools for community unity and national inspiration. In a statement marking World Football Day on May 25, the President described the sport as a universal language capable of bridging social and geographical divides across the archipelago. A central pillar of the administration's strategy is the democratization of the sport. Through the revised Sports Act, the government has dismantled the long-standing restriction that limited first-division competition to clubs based in the capital, Malé. The country is now divided into four distinct zones, allowing teams from the atolls to compete at the highest domestic level. This structural shift is designed to discover and nurture talent from across the islands, ensuring professional opportunities are no longer confined to the urban center. To support this competitive expansion, the government is prioritizing infrastructure. President Muizzu highlighted the construction of FIFA-recognized stadiums as tangible evidence of this commitment. These world-class facilities are intended to not only elevate domestic play but also position the Maldives as a viable host for international tournaments, providing local athletes with critical exposure to global competition. First Lady Sajidha Mohamed echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the sport's role in empowering the youth. She described football as more than entertainment, framing it as a foundation for personal development that teaches discipline, teamwork, and respect. By fostering these values, the First Lady noted that sports can help build safer, stronger societies and encourage young people toward brighter futures. World Football Day, celebrated annually on May 25, was inaugurated in 2024. The date commemorates the centenary of the first major international football tournament held during the 1924 Paris Olympics, underscoring the sport's enduring legacy as a global unifying force.
