President Muizzu Pledges New Growth for IT SMEs Under Maldives 2.0
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to expanding opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the information technology sector as part of the government's broader 'Maldives 2.0' digitalization initiative.
Speaking during the second episode of the 'Rayyithunge Adu' series, the President addressed concerns from a local IT professional regarding the hardships faced by small tech firms. The professional noted that a scarcity of domestic opportunities has forced many skilled Maldivians to establish their businesses and seek employment abroad.
President Muizzu emphasized that fostering the IT sector is a central pillar of his administration's economic policy. He asserted that as the nation accelerates its transition toward a digital economy, local tech SMEs will find more avenues for growth and integration into national projects.
“Expanding SMEs is a policy. Expanding the IT sector in our economy is also a policy,” President Muizzu stated, adding that the government is committed to resolving the obstacles currently hindering local innovators.
Launched last year, Maldives 2.0 is a comprehensive digital transformation project designed to integrate the operations of various government institutions over the next three years. The initiative aims to shift the Maldives toward 'smart' governance, reducing bureaucratic corruption and increasing transparency through the strategic use of technology.
Beyond economic growth for tech firms, the project focuses on radically improving the public experience. The government intends to replace fragmented, island-specific processes with a unified, connected system. This reform aims to eliminate physical and digital queues, allowing citizens to access essential services with fewer clicks and shorter wait times.
By replacing opaque procedures with a transparent service-delivery system, the government seeks to prioritize efficient outcomes and ensure that public services are faster and easier for all citizens to navigate, regardless of their geographical location.
