President Muizzu Pledges Special Priority to Strengthening Diplomatic Ties with India

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with India, stating that the administration will give special priority to strengthening bilateral relations. The President shared these sentiments in a social media post commemorating India’s 80th Independence Day. In his message, President Muizzu extended official greetings to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Indian people, noting that India's eight decades of independence symbolize a legacy of resilience and aspiration. According to the President, the bond between the Maldives and India is built on a foundation of friendship and mutual respect. This commitment comes at a pivotal time as both nations seek to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors. The two countries share a history of engagement that predates the formal establishment of diplomatic ties on November 1, 1965, rooted in centuries of robust trade relations. Diplomatic momentum has increased since President Muizzu assumed office. A significant milestone occurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Maldives last year, which resulted in the signing of several key agreements. These collaborations aim to streamline cooperation and address shared interests in regional security and development. Beyond immediate diplomatic agreements, the Maldives and India are currently engaged in multi-stage discussions to establish a free trade agreement. Such an accord would likely reduce trade barriers and boost economic exchange between the two neighbors, further cementing their economic interdependence. India celebrates its Independence Day every August 15, marking the end of British colonial rule in 1947. For the Maldives, the occasion serves as a timely reminder of the geopolitical importance of its relationship with New Delhi, its largest neighbor to the north.
