President Muizzu Pledges to Combat Unemployment for Maldivian Engineers

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to addressing the systemic unemployment challenges facing engineers in the Maldives, aiming to incentivize more young Maldivians to pursue technical careers. Speaking on the President’s Office’s "The Pulse" podcast for National Engineers’ Day, the President addressed engineering students currently studying in the United Kingdom. He acknowledged that the scarcity of stable career prospects has discouraged students from choosing engineering, leading to a shortage of local professionals in the field. To counter this trend, the government plans to restructure its support systems by prioritizing education loans for degrees in high-demand technical fields. President Muizzu further emphasized that the administration will work to ensure employment opportunities within these critical sectors are reserved for Maldivian nationals, providing a clearer career trajectory for graduates returning home. Highlighting the strategic importance of the profession, the President noted that science and mathematics-based solutions are essential across all sectors, particularly in the implementation of national development projects. He argued that a strong foundation of local engineers is vital for the country's long-term infrastructure and economic stability. Drawing from his own professional experience as a civil engineering graduate, President Muizzu shared how his technical background has informed his decision-making and project oversight during his tenure as a Cabinet minister and as President. As part of a broader strategy to enhance the local technical ecosystem, the government will establish a state-of-the-art engineering laboratory in the Maldives. This facility is designed to provide advanced analysis and testing services for students both within the Maldives and those studying abroad, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application.
