President Muizzu Ratifies Fisheries Law Amendment to Strengthen Marine Regulation

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified an amendment to the Maldives Fisheries Act, introducing a more robust legal framework to regulate and enforce standards across the nation's vital fisheries sector. The Bill, which was passed by the Parliament during its 28th sitting on August 26, was officially signed into law at a ceremony held at the President’s Office. The amendment significantly enhances the government's ability to take administrative action against fishing vessels and introduces strict new provisions regarding fishing and aquaculture activities within protected marine areas. By refining the classification of offences and updating the procedures for penalties and fines, the legislation aims to curb illegal activities and ensure sustainable resource management. Beyond enforcement, the law paves the way for the development of specialized fishing harbors. These dedicated hubs will provide safe mooring for vessels and centralized fisheries services, while also incorporating designated zones for recreational and sport fishing. The relevant ministry is now tasked with establishing the regulations necessary to manage these facilities. To further boost the blue economy, the amendment expands the provisions for leasing aquaculture areas and streamlines the procedures for their allocation and use. Additionally, it establishes a clear framework for handling the responsibilities of flag states when foreign vessels are penalized for illegal fishing within Maldivian waters. The legislation has officially come into force following its publication in the Government Gazette. Government authorities now have a 60-day window from the date of commencement to revise existing regulations and introduce the new procedural rules required to implement these changes effectively.
