President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed were accorded a formal state welcome in Colombo, Sri Lanka, marking the beginning of a high-level visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties. The ceremony, hosted by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat, featured a 21-gun salute and an official guard of honour. The event concluded with the playing of the national anthems of both nations, attended by senior Sri Lankan government officials and the Maldivian delegation. This formal reception sets the stage for a series of diplomatic engagements designed to revitalize the longstanding relationship between the two Indian Ocean neighbors. Following the ceremony, the two leaders are scheduled to engage in official talks to strengthen cooperation across several critical sectors. The agenda includes education, vocational training, economic development, and governance, alongside discussions on preserving shared heritage and coordinating positions within international forums. To formalize these agreements, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed. These documents will outline specific frameworks for collaboration, ensuring that the diplomatic dialogue translates into tangible outcomes for both countries. Beyond government-to-government talks, President Muizzu's itinerary includes a visit to the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum. This engagement aims to foster private sector ties and explore new investment opportunities. The President is also scheduled to meet with members of the Maldivian community residing in Sri Lanka to discuss their welfare and integration. According to the President’s Office, the visit serves as a strategic platform to address shared priorities. By focusing on mutual economic and social development, the Maldives and Sri Lanka seek to fortify a partnership built on historical proximity and shared regional interests.
