President Muizzu Recounts Historical Attacks on Victory Day, Stresses Lessons for Maldives' Independence
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, speaking at the official Victory Day gathering held this evening at Jubilee Square, revisited historical attacks that threatened the independence of the Maldives. The President stated that history serves as a window into the future, offering important lessons from past incidents and ancestors who secured victory for the Maldives' independence.
President Muizzu referenced attacks launched by the Portuguese against the Maldives starting in the 16th century AD. He noted that during a dangerous naval battle, the flags of the Portuguese were planted on the outer side of the Jubilee Square area. He also highlighted that the land where Sultan Park, located near the Islamic Centre, stands was the site of the royal palace at that time, and that the most intense battles took place between these two locations.
The President attributed the extent of damage caused by the Portuguese to some individuals who, with the intention of restoring a former king to power, undermined the dignity and internal stability of the Maldivians. He further detailed the attack by the Malabars in 1753, which destroyed the 800-year-old royal palace, several mosques, and public homes. The king was arrested, and many citizens were killed. State archives and documents preserved for 800 years were lost in that incident, a battle also instigated by some Maldivians due to treachery.
President Muizzu also discussed the Bolahulu incident, stating it was carried out by some Maldivians hiding behind those in power due to treachery, with the support of a powerful foreign imperial state. False stories misled citizens, leading to the destruction of homes and state assets and compromising the country's security.
While illuminating the candle for Victory Day, the President said that 19 Maldivians shed their blood due to betrayal behind those in power. He noted that the burial places of those martyred that day and the special building named after Martyr Hussein Adam revive the hearts of Maldivians regarding independence and respect for the martyrs. The President concluded that those martyrs prioritized the independence and safety of the country over their families, and that loyalty brings honor while betrayal brings disgrace.
