President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially designated the residents of Hirimaradhoo island in Haa Dhaal Atoll as citizens of Hanimaadhoo island, despite their continued residence in Hirimaradhoo. This decision means Hirimaradhoo residents will now vote for Hanimaadhoo candidates in the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections. The President’s Office announced this move on Tuesday, stating it is part of the relocation process of Hirimaradhoo residents to Hanimaadhoo, which falls within the same atoll. The government is currently in the process of relocating residents, and the Elections Commission has been instructed to treat Hanimaadhoo as their electoral constituency. Presidential Decree No. 36/2025 declares that once residents are settled in Hanimaadhoo, Hirimaradhoo will be deemed uninhabited. The government has not yet disclosed the timeline for the resettlement process.
