President Muizzu Reports Positive Gains from New Legal Reforms Combatting Drug Abuse

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that recent legal amendments and updated regulations designed to combat the Maldives' drug crisis are already producing tangible results. The President noted that these reforms have streamlined the enforcement of laws and strengthened cooperation between state agencies tasked with tackling drug-related crimes. In a message marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, President Muizzu characterized drug abuse as a critical social, moral, and economic challenge that poses a direct threat to national security. He emphasized that the revised Drug Act and strengthened regulations now provide a clear operational roadmap for law enforcement and judicial bodies. The government's primary objectives are focused on preventing traffickers from entering the country, ensuring offenders are brought swiftly before the courts, and guaranteeing that penalties prescribed by law are strictly applied. This approach aligns with the international theme, "World Drug Problem: Persistent Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses," aiming to safeguard the nation's youth and future stability. Beyond enforcement, the administration is prioritizing recovery and rehabilitation. The President revealed that new rehabilitation centers are currently being developed across three regions of the Maldives to expand treatment services for those recovering from addiction. These facilities represent a shift toward a more comprehensive approach that balances punishment for traffickers with care for users. President Muizzu urged a collective effort, calling on families, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to collaborate in building a drug-free society. He stressed the importance of promoting positive lifestyles to prevent individuals from turning to narcotics. On the international stage, the Maldives will continue to leverage regional partnerships to address the cross-border nature of drug trafficking.
