President Muizzu Reports Thilamale’ Bridge Now 75 Percent Complete

The construction of the Thilamale’ Bridge is accelerating rapidly, with 75 percent of the project now complete, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced. The President attributed this progress to a strengthened partnership between the governments of the Maldives and India, emphasizing a shared commitment to expedite the critical infrastructure project. Speaking on the latest episode of 'The Pulse' podcast, President Muizzu revealed that his administration effectively restarted the project from scratch upon taking office. He noted that no practical work had been executed for the segment connecting Malé and Villimale’, and no bridge pillars had been constructed at that time, despite the project being intended for completion under the previous government. The President highlighted that the connection between Malé and Villimale’ is now nearly finished. Simultaneously, construction is advancing on the segments linking Villimale’, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu. To ensure swift delivery, the government is maintaining close coordination with Indian authorities and contractors. Technical progress is currently focused on the casting and installation of bridge-deck segments. Of the 1,222 required segments, 90.4 percent have been cast, and 72.9 percent have already been installed to connect the bridge pillars. This represents a significant leap from the 30 percent completion rate recorded by the previous administration. The government views the bridge as a strategic necessity for the Greater Malé area and a catalyst for the broader national economy. By streamlining operations and improving bilateral cooperation, the current administration aims to fully complete the bridge by the end of next year. Once finished, the bridge will provide vital connectivity between the capital, the industrial hub of Thilafushi, and the developing urban center of Hulhumalé, reducing reliance on ferry transport and easing the congestion of the region's logistics network.
